This striking new hotel stands in the
grounds of Nottingham University Park Campus just off of Beeston Lane and
was opened in 2012. It's design by the London firm of architects,
RHWL Architects really makes the most of the contours of this beautiful
parkland setting and I for one was very impressed by it. It
basically consists of two bedroom wings with a central hub. The
public space is enclosed by structural glass roof and an over-sailing
timber canopy that defines the building and lifts it well above the
average offering that we have come to expect for this type of structure.
It's £20M cost was funded by the university and the hotel is operated by
De Vere. The main contractor was BAM Construction.
The two Bramley Apple sculptures are by
Hilary Cartmel who has her studio in north Nottinghamshire. The
Orchard / Apple theme comes from the fact that the hotel is build nearby
the orchard of Bramley Apple trees that Professor Ted Cocking from the
Department of Biology at the university cloned 20 years ago from the
original 200 year old Bramley Apple tree. That tree still survives
in Southwell, Notts,
The hotel has been built to the
highest environmental standards featuring state of the art technology to
minimise carbon emissions including a green roof, photovoltaic panels,
energy efficient lighting & ventilation systems, and ground source
heat pumps
RHWL
Architects were founded in the early 1960′s by Andrew Renton, Peter
Howard, Humphrey Wood and Gerald Levin.
On the same site and just across an
internal road from the hotel stands The East Midlands Conference centre
also operated by De Vere
