41 Pilcher Gate

View from corner with St. Mary's Gate

I was shocked to find this building without its roof,  fearing that the reputed fine interior, particularly the staircase would be totally ruined by water damage.

However after checking with the City Council Conservation Officer, my fears have been put to rest.  He informs me that what can't be seen in this picture is an internal water tight deck that has been installed at second floor level and that below that level work to restore the interior is ongoing.

Apparently the roof was not only in a poor state due to rot, it had never been built properly in the first place and had been cobbled together using all sorts of scrap timber, even a decorative carved cornice board.  More good news is that a new steel frame for a new roof is expected to be lowered into place  around early May time.

It will be great to see this building brought back to use.
