Nottingham Buildings MAGGIE'S - NOTTINGHAM Nottingham
City Hospital Site |
|||||
Maggie's is a charitable trust that was established to support those diagnosed with cancer and their families by providing places where they are able meet with fellow sufferers and qualified support staff to discuss their condition and to gain help and guidance to see them through the their course of treatment and beyond. The charity has several meeting places throughout the UK and after a determined fund raising campaign the Nottingham Maggie's was finally built and opened on the 2nd November 2011 by Hermione Norris, Sarah Brown, Piers Gough and Sir Paul Smith. The Nottingham building was designed by Piers Gough CBE of CZWG Architects of London and in my view is one of the very best pieces of modern architectural design to be found in the city. It occupies a perfect little plot in the south west corner of the City Hospital site that is on quite a steep incline and surrounded by mature trees just below the old workhouse chapel of St Luke's. So in tune with its surroundings, it actually looks like a futuristic tree house an effect that will certainly be enhanced once the trees come into leaf in the spring. The building is partially supported on columns and a 'basement' and is completely symmetrical in shape with oval sides that are clad in a very pleasing shade of green ceramic tiles. Access is via a ramp from the top of the site with a sweeping stepped pathway leading down to the parking area to the side. The interior was designed by local lad, Sir Paul Smith (Of fashion fame), and construction was undertaken by the Bowmer & Kirkland Group. |
