Nottingham Buildings The Nottingham & Nott's Bank Head Office Thurland
Street |
|||||
One of the grandest
buildings in the city, this
is
another
very
fine
building
by
Nottingham
architect
Watson Fothergill,
built
between
1877
and
1882. On
this
one
he
must
have
had
an
almost
limitless
budget
and
it
shows
in
the
abundance
of
detail
and
in
the
materials
used. I've
not
seen
all
his
designs,
but
this
has
to
be
one
of very the best, certainly of those still left standing. Before the Banking
& Co-Partnership Act of 1826 the only Joint Stock Bank was The Bank of
England. Before that date banks were privately owned with up to six
partners jointly responsible for any debts. The 1826 Act allowed other
banks to be formed that could issue shares (stock), thus spreading the
risk more widely making them more secure. |
