This plaque above the name depicts two armoured knights on horseback. One has lowered his lance to receive a 'favour' from a lady. Its obviously a jousting tournament and I can only assume that it is the depiction of a scene from the lives of Dorothy Vernon & John Manners. There were a number of fictional books and a movie film based on their romance, but separating fact from fiction in relation to Dorothy Vernon is, according to reports I have read, very difficult as the two have been merged through the mist of time.
