Yates's Wine Lodge / The Talbot Inn Long Row This is one of the busts that stand along the roof line. Are they the Earls of Shrewsbury ? If anyone knows, I would be pleased to hear from them. In the early 1960's Yates's was an odd place, like a time warp from the 1920's / 30's. Downstairs was a proper old fashioned drinking hall with long bar and sawdust on the floor but upstairs on the gallery was a trio of piano, violin and cello playing very old tunes and dressed in full formal tuxedo evening suits standing under potted palm trees with an aspidistra on the piano. I think that they were known as The Palm Court Trio. Remember this was at the time when the likes of Elvis Presley topped the charts. The place was very popular just because it was so out of time - and for it's cheap, very large glasses of Australian white wine. © Ray Teece 12-10-2006 NB00236 |
