Sneinton Hermitage With regard to the use of this particular cave dwelling, they can't with any certainty marry it up to ancient drawings of caves in the area as the external surface has changed over time. However, it is thought that this one may have been used for brewing beer - but that is not certain. Apparently geologists / archaeologists have determined that this cave was hacked out by a left handed digger. This is determined by the angle of the pick marks on the walls. It is also believed that in times past, left handed people were treated as outcasts in some communities and that this could be the reason the caves are here - far removed from what would have been the city limits.
