Nottingham Castle

The courtyard entrance tunnel is on the left. The elaborate and mysterious doorway to the right of it is very odd.  I had assumed that it might give access to a small room for use by a gate keeper but I was wrong......

Site visitor Kurt Hatton, a guide for the Nottingham Civic Society informs me that the Third Duke of Newcastle saw a house being demolished in Castle Gate and asked the men if they would rebuild it in his gardens. The door was placed where it stands today and serves no purpose at all other than ornamental.

It is also said that at Christmas, Victorian children posted their letters to Santa thought the letter box on this door.
