The Nottingham Joint Stock Bank Peveril Street / Alfreton Road View of the Alfreton Road side Before the Banking & Co-Partnership Act of 1826 the only Joint Stock Bank was The Bank of England. Before that date banks were privately owned with up to six partners jointly responsible for any debts. The 1826 Act allowed other banks to be formed that could issue shares (stock), thus spreading the risk more widely making them more secure. These early Joint Stock Banks were still small local operations, and the Nottingham Joint Stock Bank would have been one of the first to be founded after the Act. I do believe that this building is later than the date on it (1829), but it is probable that this date represents the date it was founded. The bank did have at least one other branch in Arkwight Street, but this is long gone. © Ray Teece 29-10-2008 NB01068 |
