The Duke of Newcastle's Tunnel The Park Estate The Tunnel is cut in two stages through the Nottingham sandstone and the whole area appears to have been cleaned up quite recently. When I first saw it some 40 years ago, it was all overgrown and access did not appear possible. The effect of passing through it is the same now as it must have been when it was built. You enter from a quiet genteel, countryside environment with trees, bowling greens and birds singing and emerge at the other onto a noisy, busy city road. .
