Newstead Abbey & Park

Newstead is NOT in Nottingham, but as it is owned by the City Council I thought it appropriate to include it.  It is located north of the city near Ravenshead on the road out to Mansfield

The Abbey that is famous for its association with the poet Lord Byron was originally an Augustinian priory founded by Henry II in about 1170      It eventually came into the hands of the philanthropist Sir Julien Cahn, who later presented it to Nottingham Corporation in 1931.

This park is still as beautiful as ever and well worth a visit.  On my recent visit the park and gardens were well maintained but it was a little worrying to note that the lovely rose pergola around the bottom side of the lower lake has still not been restored.  It was also worrying to find this park almost devoid of visitors and we almost had it to ourselves.  I know it was mid - week but there are thousands of other senior citizens out there who should be visiting this fantastic public asset.  So:
