Wollaton Hall & Park
These heavy duty iron gates are positioned between the family quarters and the below stairs servants quarters and tradesman's entrance and were locked at night for the security of the family. When rioters burnt down Nottingham Castle in 1831 Wollaton very nearly suffered a similar fate at the hands of an angry mob. Following this close escape, the family felt they could no longer sleep soundly knowing that servants could enter their quarters or allow others into the house to do them harm. Hence the gates were fitted.
