Wollaton Hall & Park
|
|||||
Wollaton is The Jewel in the Crown of Nottingham Parks and combines the splendid Tudor Hall with a very extensive 500 acre deer park, lake, formal gardens, natural history museum and industrial museum. It is one of the finest houses of the period in all of England. It was designed by Robert Smythson and was built between 1580 & 1588 for Sir Francis Willoughby who made his fortune from coal mining. Unfortunately, this gem had suffered from neglect and lack of maintenance and was allowed to fall into decline, but substantial funds were recently secured by The Nottingham City Council and during 2007 / 2008 it underwent a very extensive internal and external restoration. This included the opening of Prospect Room and the Elizabethan Kitchens to the public for the very first time. An excellent tour of these new areas and other parts of the house with a very knowledgeable guide is available for an extra charge. The formal gardens in front of the camellia house have also been totally re-created from scratch to an authentic period design and are magnificent during the summer months. With access to the park and most areas of the house being FREE, Wollaton Park is back where it belongs as The No.1 Nottingham Park for a family day out.
