Nottingham Buildings Wollaton Village and its Buildings
|
|||||
Wollaton Village is located to the west of the city centre and was incorporated into the City of Nottingham in 1933. Whilst the centre of the old village still retains a very strong village atmosphere and has changed little in my lifetime, Wollaton itself now covers a very considerable area that merges into an almost continuous urban sprawl of housing with other parts of the city and with nearby Beeston & Bramcote. Wollaton is an area of predominantly private housing occupied and sought after by the professional classes for its easy commuting distance into the city centre and its close proximity to the M1 motorway. Wollaton was mentioned in the Doomsday book of 1086 and is world famous for the magnificent Elizabethan mansion and deer park Wollaton Hall that is now owned and maintained by the Nottingham City Council. This house, was built between 1580 & 1588 for Sir Francis Willoughby who's family owned the manor of Wollaton and went on to become the Earls of Middleton. Sir Francis made his fortune from the local coal mines. The Middleton's had a close association with the village for 600 years and the present Lord Middleton is still Patron of the Parish of Wollaton. |
